The chairman confirmed that a quorum existed and thus opened the meeting. He expressed his appreciation for the use of the great new ‘Achtzehn Convention Centre’ named in honour of his parents. Brad Rayson was thanked for the use of the venue at no cost.
AGM 2016 minutes were approved: Prop. C Hatt, Sec. R Achtzehn.
The chairman, Klaus Achtzehn welcomed all and said that it had been an uneventful year.
There had been no financial transactions on the ZBC account during the year .
Bing Comrie unfortunately has resigned from the committee as they have moved to the Cape.
The committee decided to present him with a certificate of appreciation for his many years of valuable support of the conservancy.
The certificate for Fokko Fokkens, as decided at the previous AGM, was presented to him earlier this year at Harold Johnson.
The storm damage to the Lala Trail has been repaired. In the process an alternate route into the depression has been identified and is being developed. All helpers and sponsors were thanked particularly Bruce Tucker, Mike Crossman and Roy Bowton.
The Crowned Eagles have also re-built their collapsed nest in the same tree and appear to be breeding again.
Since the removal of Ezimvelo beach patrols, members of our committee have also patrolled the beaches with our new ‘environmental protection officer’ vests. The feedback is that these ‘official’ patrols are very effective.
Cliff Hatt’s beach cleaning ‘Pick-up 5’ campaign will be expanded in the coming year with generous sponsors and marketing professionals.
The recent provincial beach pollution disaster with plastic nurdles is also being addressed.
A new official nature reserve is being set up at Tugela Mouth. ZBC has been asked to handle the financial administration on an ongoing basis. Gareth Roberts, who ran our international LTBPP and TMPA projects, will manage the reserve. This new development will not only benefit our immediate environment but also provide the conservancy with a more sustainable basis into the future.
Cliff will again arrange a full programme of activities for the holiday season as in the past. He was thanked by all present for his efforts.
The present committee is:
Cliff Hatt, Klaus Achtzehn, Eberhard Fritsch, Wendy Balcomb, Pete Saville. They are prepared to continue.
In addition Sue Tanner and Henry Harris were nominated for the committee and agreed to join.
Sue Tanner suggested we look at Global Warming. She can put together a presentation for the community – ideally at this new venue.
Jasper Pons proposed a vote of thanks to the committee.
The meeting closed at 18h45.
